A study carried out by Bill Meier (2011) to assess the benefits of the online Couple Checkup for couples using it on their own (“Self-Directed”) and in a “Small Group” setting revealed that couples liked the ease of taking the Couple Checkup, the objective feedback provided by their report, and the practical help found in the Discussion Guide.

Compared to a Control (wait-list) group, couples in the two treatment groups significantly improved on all scales measured from pre to post-test, including marital satisfaction. The two treatments groups completed the Couple Checkup at pre-test and post-test and significantly improved in 8 out of 10 categories.

The Self-Directed group appreciated the flexibility of completing sessions on their own schedule. Couples in the Small Group reported that group dynamics were helpful and supportive of their marriage.

Over 87% of the couples (108 out of 124) would recommend the Couple Checkup to their friends. This study demonstrates the power of the Couple Checkup in both Self-Directed and Small Group formats.

Improving couple relationships is a worthwhile goal, as a good marriage benefits individuals, society, and any children within the family (Waite & Gallagher, 2000).

The Couple Checkup generates deep and productive conversations that couples would not otherwise have about their relationship. These conversations restore insight and understanding about one another. The Couple Checkup can help to revive a relationship and increase intimacy.

The Couple Checkup is an online couple assessment based on the PREPARE/ENRICH couple inventories. The Checkup assessment and Checkup report are designed to go directly to couples at any stage of their relationship (dating, engaged or married). The online system allows for dynamic customization of the assessment to each couple based on how the couple answers background questions. The goal is for the Couple Checkup to reach a more diverse group of couples, to empower couples to deal with issues on their own and to emphasize prevention over remediation.
